My entry was called “Tree Sprite”. There were around 90 participants that showed up for the chalk art fest in Belmont Shore, Long Beach. 3 feet by 4 feet, soft pastel on watercolor paper, colored on the sidewalk (hence the rough texture). I didn’t place, but I still came away feeling like a winner. All day I had people stopping to talk to me, to tell me that I was the winner for sure (I took that as a compliment, not a prediction), kids sat with me to watch me draw, hundreds of photos were taken of my work, several local papers took pictures and interviewed me… the judges didn’t choose my work but my adoring public sure did. I came away flushed with compliments, happy to have been there and worked so hard.
Stan Pawlowski (sculptor of Schultz’s Peanuts, among other things) stopped to sing praises and look at my portfolio! Amazing! And Samuel Lippke (a fantastic photographer!) chatted me up and took some photos and graciously awarded me “2nd place” for his personal opinion award on his blog and featured me in his editorial on The Long Beach Post! So you see, I may not have been awarded by the judges, but I still won. Big time!
Shout-out to Justin Rudd, the organizer, terrific guy, and local hero. And a huge thanks to everyone who stopped by! And if anyone wants to buy this piece, let me know. :)

It’s beeeautiful! It’s fun to see the progression in your work from last year too. This piece shows more confidence in your style. I love the rabbit too. Bravo, and good to see you posting! I’ve been doing a little 21 day challenge over on my blog and have lots of talented company…perhaps you’d like to join us??? Check my day1 post for details.
Congrats, Mike! Your work is definitely inspirational. I know it’s rewarding that all those people enjoyed your piece and complimented your hard work.
Absolutely beautiful! =) I still say you should have come in first! (that would have been my vote anyway)
Beautiful Mike!! I really love it..
How did you not win! Dude it rocks! The other artists stuff was nice but yours was incredible. Oh well, your destined for something greater than a sidewalk contest. Your tops in my book anyday.
really lovely piece, mike! love the animals and the feet on the girl!
Dude Mike, this is great! You’re very handy with chalk and pavement, have you ever used pastels for your other work? Makes me want to cozy up in a tree with fuzzy animals. Also glad you to see you haven’t totally abandoned this blog!
Wow, this is sooooo very cool! I wish I had known about it and I’d have driven up from San Diego to cheer you on! Very nice chalk drawing, you are so very talented!
Oh wow, this is beautiful. What a fun thing to participate in. Wish I saw it in person!
