breezyA breezy swing on a sunny, windy day. The theme is “breezy” and who doesn’t like the wind whistling in your ears as you zip back and forth on a swing? This little girl certainly does.

Drawn in pencil, inked, then scanned and colored in Photoshop. About 2.5 hours.

instinct of the cat - the death of a ratThe instinct of the cat means the death of a rat. I read Coraline to my daughter a couple of months ago. It was instantly one of our favorite books. We were very excited about the movie. It did not disappoint. It’s very rare to find a movie that so well preserves the spirit of the book. We will be enjoying both the book and the movie again soon.

A bit of a different style for me. What do you think? Photoshop, about an hour (not including time spent sketching out a few ideas), for Illustration Friday. Click it for a better look!

coraline pulp novelEDIT (Feb. 21, 2pm): I liked the design and felt it fit well with an old pulp novel sort of feel. I was partly inspired by Spacesick’s wonderful I Can Read Movies series. I designed the book cover and title, using pictures of a button and needle I posterized, then I used the book texture and instructions found here. Try it! It was fun. :)

the real boom-boomFOUND! Photographic evidence of Boom-Boom’s existence. Some have had their doubts and accused me of weaving lies (or telling tall tales). But here is a photograph and if that’s not Minnie “Boom-Boom” Mahoony then I’ll eat a sandwich! You may recall when I first found Boom-Boom, performing death-defying acts. I found her again in a lovely wedding picture. I am now thinking about pursuing her history further and Illustrating her amazing life. Wrestling alligators? Solving mysteries? Hunting snarks? Shooting out of a cannon? So much to tell. Are you a Boom-Boom fan?

Kreativ Blogger awardWell, my friend Nina Seven gave me that Kreativ Blogger award that’s been floating around. Nina does adorable illustrations so check out her blog.

The thing about this award seems to be that I must list 7 things I love and then pass on this award to some other folk. Okie-dokie. 7 things I love:

1. My family. Nothing is more important or brings me greater joy than my wife, Kelly, and my daughter, Jasmine.

2. Art. Pretty much all art. I have a particular affection for pop surrealism or lowbrow art, and illustration, particularly children’s illustration.

3. Sandwiches. Nothing beats a good sandwich for the perfect food.

4. Movies. I’m not an aficionado of celluloid, a guru of film, a gourmand of cinema, but I do love a good movie.

6. Cooking. I cook every day and love what I cook. I love to eat and I cook what I love to eat. I haunt farmer’s markets and specialty shops. I read cookbooks and watch cooking shows. My cooking is celebrated among all who have been blessed with tasting it. Really. It’s true. It’s that good.

7. You. Oh, please, can I be serious? You??? Am I some sort of weirdo? A freak? A crack-pot? Yes, I am. And I really do love you.

Giving this award (wheather they like it or not) to:
David Sones (Pickledog)
Jannie Ho (Chickengirl)
Andi Butler (Mrs. B)
Flora Chang (happydoodleland)
Zari

Yes, they probably have one already. But this one is from me! :)

a bunch of little thumbnails of some of my workMy name is mike r. baker and I’m an illustrator. What’s the big deal? Well, I haven’t said that before. I’ve always been saying “I want to be a” when speaking of illustrator or artist. I know I have the talent. I’m still learning technique. I’ve done a few local things professionally but nothing I can hold up and say “see what I did” yet. But I feel like I’m on the cusp of being what I want to be – better, I’ve crossed to that side. I’ve still a long way to go. But I just wanted to take this moment to say it. My name is mike r. baker and I’m an illustrator.
